These snapshots—taken from A Lanodekan Bestiary--feature many of the creatures Lillian and her friends met on their adventures. The full bestiary includes the human myth and the actual history for each creature.
Dragon: Often portrayed as greedy hoarders in human mythology, real dragons are wise, gentle creatures. Until recently, they were the most powerful creatures in Lanodeka. |
Griffin: These noble creatures value good manners above all things. It's as rare for a griffin to lie as it is for an elf to tell the truth, hence the motto, "As true as a griffin's beak." |
Chimera: These creatures are rarely seen, even in Lanodeka. They keep to themselves, choosing to live deep in the forest. When provoked, they are ferocious hunters. |
Siren: Trouble-maker or just mischievous prankster? A siren can use her song to make you do almost anything--planting ideas, images, and even memories in your mind. |
Medusa: With snakes for hair and scales for skin, one look will turn any creature to stone. But there's more to this monster's sad story than even she remembers. |
Elf: In Lanodeka, elves do not look like Orlando Bloom! They are only three feet tall and resemble living skeletons. These vicious omnivores are never to be trusted! |
Dryad: Watching dryads heal burnt trees is a profoundly spiritual experience. After the migration, a few dryads remained on earth, working to heal the forests. |
Hydra: These mystical creatures were hunted to extinction by humans (like the assassin Hercules). Their beautiful, 7-part harmonic songs have been silenced forever. |
Unicorn: In human myth, unicorns are shy, nobel creatures. But get two or more together, and they become quite silly and like to" pole vault" across open fields. |
Hippocampus: These creatures have a legendary sense of empathy, which many believe comes from their shapeshifting ability. Jack's father was a hippocampus. |
Cyclops: Once again, the human myths are wrong. The cyclops was vegetarian, with a mouthful of molars. Sadly, humans hunted these domestic creatures to extinction. |
Rivermander: Having evolved in Lanodeka, the rivermander never existed on earth. Maisy has more than one close encounter with this deadly water dweller. |
Roc: This ferocious, blue-feathered creature is a griffin's natural enemy—and an elf's natural ally. An elf is a scary thing to see, but an elf riding a roc it truly terrible. |
Orc: Though utterly bloodthirsty, orcs can be quite funny. Here’s a riddle they find hilarious: “Know what would taste really good right now?” “What?” “You.” |
Kraken: Out of the hundreds hunted on earth, only one kraken remains, safe in Lanodeka—or is it? Even this sacred creature may find itself at risk in times of war. |
Minotaur: Of all the human myths, the story of the minotaur may be the most backwards. Not only did they build the maze, but they used it to hide from humans! |
